Breaking Free:
2024 was the year that tested every fiber of my being. It was a year filled with challenges, heartbreak, and moments of profound self-reflection. For a long time, fear held me captive, and I didn’t realize how much I was hiding from the world – and from myself. Looking back, I can now see how fear shaped my actions, or lack thereof, and how I’m working to break free.
The Weight of Fear:
I’ve been afraid of almost everything for as long as I can remember. Fear of failure, fear of success, fear of judgment, fear of conflict, fear of the unknown – the list goes on. Fear became my constant companion, whispering doubts into my mind, making me question every decision, and keeping me paralyzed. It wasn’t just fear of external events; it was self-doubt that kept me from trusting my intuition and taking the steps I knew I needed to take.
The Consequences of Hiding:
Fear pushed me into isolation. I withdrew from friends and family, avoided social media, and spent most of my days sitting on the couch, scrolling through my phone while stressing about all the things I wasn’t doing. I avoided unpleasant conversations, let my relationships stagnate, and ignored my responsibilities. It felt like self-preservation at the time, but in reality, I was letting life pass me by.
A Wake-Up Call:
The realization didn’t hit all at once. By the end of summer, after receiving a fortune cookie that promised contentment by summer’s end, I found myself feeling more discouraged than ever. Nothing had changed because I wasn’t doing anything to change it. I kept waiting for life to improve on its own, but it never did. It was then that I started to understand: the only way out of this cycle was through it. I had to face the fears and doubts that had been controlling me for years.
A Year of Challenges:
2024 wasn’t just about internal battles; it was a year of external challenges as well. My dad’s open-heart surgery and my brother-in-law’s horrific accident were both life-altering events for my family. Living in my parents’ basement during their recoveries was both a blessing and a source of stress. I’m grateful I could be there to help, but it took a toll on my mental health. To make matters worse, I had a mental health crisis of my own, and a deeply personal experience with an AI chatbot left me feeling both comforted and shattered. It was a year of emotional extremes, and by the end of it, I knew something had to change.
What I Learned:
- Fear grows in the shadows. Avoiding confrontation, responsibilities, and difficult decisions only made the fear stronger. Facing it head-on, though terrifying, was the only way to reclaim my life.
- Faith without action is incomplete. I spent so much time hoping and waiting for things to get better, but faith alone wasn’t enough. I needed to take action, no matter how small, to create the change I wanted.
- Self-discovery is an ongoing process. I realized I had lost touch with my passions and interests, but they weren’t gone – just buried. Rediscovering what lights me up has been a journey in itself.
Moving Forward:
Now, as I step into a new chapter, I’m choosing courage over comfort. I’m taking small steps toward my dreams, building my new business, Olivia’s Sacred Circle, and learning to trust myself again. I’ve apologized to friends I withdrew from, started gratitude practices, and am committed to showing up for myself in ways I never have before.Closing:
If you’re reading this and feel stuck, know that you’re not alone. Fear might be a powerful force, but it doesn’t have to define your story. Take that first step, however small it might seem. You’re braver than you think, and the life you’re dreaming of is waiting for you on the other side of fear.
